Propylene is produced in the BASF Steamcracker by cracking naphtha and is, besides ethylene, one of the most important basic chemicals in the petrochemical industry. For example propylene is used as raw material for propylene oxide, propylene glycol, acrylic acid, acrylonitrile and butyraldehyde. Important characteristics of propylene are: highly flammable, colorless, mildly scented.
